In 1977 we were invited to go to a meeting outside on a farm where they had a big store / barn house. They called it the Full Gospel Businessmen Fellowship meetings, the place was called Eldorado. They said there was a man ministering by the name of Kenneth Hagan. Now, I never heard of Kenneth Hagan.
I was just saved recently and I came out of a religious background, I grew up where everything was negative, When it was raining, my mother would say: ‘Don’t go out in the rain, you’ll get a cold.’ When we walked in the traffic, they said: ‘Watch out! A car is going to kill you’. Did anyone else grow up like that? ‘I laugh myself to death.’ You know, everything was in the negative.
We went to this meeting and here is the scripture the man read:
Prov 6:2 Thou art snared with the words of thy mouth, thou art taken with the words of thy mouth. Your lips put you in a snare. A snare is when you put out a trap for a bird. You have this little cage with a rope and a stick underneath it. Then you put some seed underneath it and you wait for the bird. When the bird comes to eat the seed, you pull the rope and you catch it. Anybody ever did that?
You lips put you in a snare. In other words: it put you in a cage and you can’t come out of it. You are caught with the words of your mouth. Put your hand on your mouth, on your lips and say:
‘Oh God, forgive me. Help me to say the right stuff.’
So we went to this Kenneth Hagan meeting and for the first time in my life I heard a two-hour sermon. This guy stood up and said: ‘Well, I’m going to preach for two hours. We’re going to talk about lips and your mouth. We’re going to talk about your snare.’ He just told story upon story about people that changed their confessions. How they were healed, how they got cars and houses that they never had, healings that they never had. He said: ‘But you got to stick to speaking right and you got to cut out speaking wrong”
Say: ‘I must speak right. But I must not speak wrong.’
We started touching on it lately that it’s not only the right-speaking but also the not-wrong speaking.
Remember when they asked John: ‘Who are you? Are you the Prophet? Are you the Messiah?’ He said: ‘No. I am only the voice.’ What was John? A voice! Why was he a voice? He had to voice that the Word was coming into the world. God needed a voice to proclaim: ‘Here comes the Word!’ The Word was now going to be made flesh, but first needed a voice.
Here comes Zachariah who was supposed to be the father of John, who was supposed to be the voice crying out in the wilderness. At the hour of the burning of the incense he went into the temple to bring the daily sacrifice. As he was inside , an angel of the Lord appear. He said: ‘Zachariah, your cries have been heard. Your wife, Elizabeth, although in an old age, is going to conceive.
She’s going to bring forth a child and you must call him John, for he’s going to be the voice.’ He wanted to say: ‘No! Uh-uh, nobody in my family has got the name John.” He opposed the angel’s voice of:
‘….the voice’s name is going to be John. And God said: ‘This man’s trouble. If he says something else, we’re going to miss the voice. We got to have the voice speaking. So, to stop this man, let’s stop his voice.” And God struck him with dumbness and for the next 9 months Zachariah couldn’t talk. Nine months later John was born. The voice has come. They went into the temple to do the ritual and they asked what his name would be. They started calling out names. Zachariah showed: ‘Bring me a tablet.’ He wrote: JOHN. The minute he wrote it, his voice came, and the voice came.
That’s how much God cares about you saying the right things.
Num 14. The old-old story. Chapters 12 and 13. Moses sent out the 12 spies to look at the promised land. They came back with … grapes! … two men had to carry it … that was a lot of grapes. Imagine you need a Nissan-bakkie to carry a peach, a ten-ton truck to carry a watermelon. They came with a lot of stuff, but listen to their confession of faith. I call it a confession of fear.
Num 13:33 This is ten of the spies: And there we saw the giants, the sons of Anak … I mean, these guys had 6 toes on each foot and 6 fingers on each hand, standing 8 feet tall.
:33 … which come of the giants: and we were in our own sight as grasshoppers, and so we were in their sight. They didn’t only think it, they said it.
Now listen. The guys of this land didn’t see the spies. They didn’t know about the spies. And this is how many people react. Have you ever walked into a room and you feel like everybody is looking at you? And then you start looking down at your own clothes to see if everything’s okay? So why did you do that? Why did you feel like a grasshopper? You think that other people think there’s something wrong with you, cause you think there is something wrong with you. Then you start looking to see what is wrong with you. And then you start saying ..
People will say: ‘Ah! I like your dress.’ Instead of saying thank you, you say: ‘It’s from Cheap Stores.’ Why do you say it? The person never asked you where you bought it. He said it looks nice. Why don’t you say; ‘Wow, thank you. I also thought so, that’s why I bought them.’ ‘I like your shoes.’ “I bought it at a sale.’ They didn’t ask if it is sale-shoes, they said they like it. Why don’t you say: ‘Wow! Awesome!’
Say: ‘Grasshopper! Out of my life!’ See that thing and squash it.
Say: ‘Out of my life!’
Who do we call Heavenly Father? Is God our Father? Imagine you say: ‘Father, Heavenly Father, our Father.’ Close your eyes and say: ‘Our Father which art in heaven.’ Imagine God peeps down on us with feelers and wings … Is God a grasshopper? No! so why do you think you’re a grasshopper?
Say: ‘John 10:34 I am a god. I am a son of God. John 1:12, 1 Pet 1:23 I am born-again.
God is my Father.
Now listen to Caleb.
Num 13:30 And Caleb stilled the people before Moses, and said, Let us go up at once, and possess it; for we are well able to overcome (conquer) it.
There’s a between the two groups: two men on the one side, and ten on the other side. Ten said: ‘We are grasshoppers!’ They didn’t think it. They said it. ‘We can’t take the land, they’re going to kill us. They
are giants.’ Two said: ‘They’re so big, we can’t miss them.’ That is more or less David’s story: The Israelites said: ‘Ooh, he’s so big, he’s going to kill us.’ David said” ‘He’s so big, I can’t miss him. Give me
one stone, I’ll smash him up. He must go-liath.’
Forty years later, those ten guys with all the people who believed them, were dead. It was then Joshua’s turn to possess the land. God said to Joshua: ‘Go up at once and possess the land.’ The same words God said to Moses forty years earlier. “Go across the Jordan now!’ The same sentence.
Joshua 2:1 And Joshua, son of Nun sent out … two men to spy secretly (only two) and came into an harlot’s house, named Rahab …
:9 And she said unto the men, … unto the spies. Now, a spy doesn’t enter a land with a big board in front of him and an AK 47 and say: I’m a spy! No, a spy comes secretly, leopard-crawling. He’s got clothes on that nobody can see. He’s in hiding … sneaking around corners.
:9 …I know that the Lord hath given you’re the land, ( she’s telling them) and that your terror is fallen upon us, and that all the inhabitants of the land faint because of you.
I mean, forty years ago those other spies said: ‘We are as grasshoppers ! ’ Now the other side said: Our land is fainting because of you. For we have heard … there must have been a voice … how the Lord dried up the Red Sea and stuff like that. That the God of Heaven is for you and with you.”
One little story:
Years ago I used to buy these little scrap cars, built them up, ride them for a month or two, sell for a little profit, buy another scrap car that’s more expensive. And this is how we travelled. We didn’t have money, so we couldn’t go to a shop to buy a decent car. We had 3 little boys and we had this old bakkie. With 3 spare engines in the garage. You know, I didn’t change the engines, just changed the spares. Every now and then I had to strip the engines to see which piston would be the best, which rings would still work. I didn’t have money to buy new ones.
At last I sold it and bought a better car and so I went from scrappy to scrappy.
So one day I decided: This is it. I started confessing: ‘I’m going to get a brand-new BMW, but not just brand-new. I want the first of the new series when it comes out.’ Now that was not just an order, it was a tall order. I ordered the new series with the color. I wrote in my cheque-book that it must be brand-new, burgundy, 528 BMW, new series coming out in February 1997. I said it.
A few months before that, I went to this guy from an Indian Shop. He had a 7 series, burgundy, that he wanted to sell. So I went to him and said: ‘Can I buy that car?’ He offered it to me, but it had 2 000 kilometers on it after 3 years. He said: ‘You can buy it, this is the price …’ I said: ‘You’re crazy man. I will not pay this for a car. I’m going to get one from God.”
A few months later a car was delivered at my house. Three farmers, a guy with his son and sonin-law sat in my house. They phoned garages all over the country. There was nothing available because it was a new series. So eventually they phoned a branch in Vereeniging and they said they had one in Pietersburg, but unfortunately it was a color they didn’t order … it was burgundy. The farmer said: ‘That’s the right car.’ So I got the number-plate and I went to this Indian Shop. I said to the guy: ‘Can I show you something awesome today?’ I said t to him that must trust me and I lindfolded him. Then I took him to the front of the car, in front of the number-plate and I said: ‘Would you go on your knees, please?’ He said: ‘Kobus, what are you trying to do?’ He went on his knees and I took the blindfold off. That was in 1997. He said: ‘No, this is not fair.’ I said: ‘The Bible says every knee shall bow. Oh yes! The number-plate said: JESUS IS LORD. PRAYED AND PAID FOR. He said: ‘This is not fair.’
Till today, after all these years, if I walk into that shop and there are people in the shop, he will always say: ‘Here comes the richest man in Klerksdorp.’
It was a long story to say: They said our land is fainting because of you; we are in terror because of you. Till today they say: ‘There’s the richest man in Klerksdorp. I say: ‘Confess it!’ If the heathen confess it, it’s IT!
We are well able to conquer it.
Rom 8:31 … If God be for us, who can be against us?
:32 He that spared not His own Son, but delivered him up for us all, how shall he not with him also freely give us all things? What on earth can you put into “all things”.
Say: ‘I can have all things freely because God is for me.
:35 … tribulation, or distress, or persecutions, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or sword?
:37 …in all these things we are more than conquerors through him that loved us.
First we were able to conquer, bur in verse 37 he says we are more than conquerors.
I’m going to tell you an old story now, as old as 1935.
It comes out of the days of the heavy-weight – boxer, Rocky Machiano. Those guys did not get up one morning and said: ‘I’m going to be the heavy-weight champion of the world.’ If they went into the ring that way, they would never come out. These guys trained, they exercised, they ran, they skipped, they boxed, they sweat. When it was time for the big fight, the trainer would tell him to go home and to relax. Not to do anything but to think.
To see the fight , to see the first round and to see their opponent on the floor, knocked out. “I’ll knock him out, I’ll knock him out!” So when the fight came, this guy’s wife would normally stay at home, watching the fight and her husband on the television, biting her nails and spitting them out. She’ll just watch. Man! 3.4 million ….
‘The heavy-weight- champion of the world weighing in at so much … and on the other side we have the challenger weighing in at …’ First round: 9-7 … second round … third round … ‘You got to knock him out!’ ‘I’l knock him out, I’l knock him out!’ They sweat and everything was broken, There’s blood all over. Ice … water … cream … but they look as if they came out of World War II.
Eventually … “I’l knock him out, I’l knock him …’ and then: BAM!! All of a sudden this guy got energy that he didn’t have for 12 years. He ran around, shouting — gorilla — oerang-oetang —chimpanzee – moves. His manager had already got his hand up. They gave him a cheque for 3.4 million.
He went home and gave it to his wife. She sat there, and she’s more than a conqueror. She didn’t fight, she didn’t exercise, had no cuts. But … next day she would go to the bank. She would buy a chain this thick, with diamonds in it. She would buy a ring … (you can’t walk in Johannesburg with that ring. They’ll not only cut your finger, they’ll cut your hand, your arm and your neck off for that ring.)
Jesus was beaten to everything on that cross. He took the punch. They ripped Him apart, nails through
His hands and His feet, crown of thorns on His head and a spear in His side. He hung on that cross.
If God loved us so …
If God is for us …
He didn’t spare His own Son but gave Him up, to be beaten to a pulp, to be crucified. He came off the cross and said: ‘I have done it so that you can just come and get all things freely.
We are more than conquerors, but we got to say it!!!
